Causes and Implications of Purple Feet

Purple feet can signal underlying health issues that require attention. One common cause is blocked arteries, which restrict blood flow and can lead to discoloration due to inadequate circulation. A lack of oxygen in the blood, often resulting from respiratory conditions or cardiovascular problems, can also cause the feet to appear purplish. Cold temperatures can worsen this condition, as blood vessels constrict in response to cold, reducing circulation and leading to a purple hue. Additionally, low blood pressure can contribute to insufficient blood flow to the extremities, causing similar discoloration. If you notice your feet have a purple hue to them, it is strongly suggested that you promptly contact a podiatrist who can determine the cause and offer appropriate treatment solutions.

Do You Suffer From Painful Feet?

Painful deformities, such as hammertoes, can be treated. Stop living with foot pain, and have beautiful feet again!

Rheumatoid arthritis, or RA, and gout are two distinct forms of arthritis that can cause significant foot pain. RA is an autoimmune condition that leads to swelling, stiffness, and inflammation in the joints, including those in the feet. This inflammation can result in joint damage if left untreated. Gout occurs when uric acid crystals accumulate in the joints, often causing sudden and intense pain, redness, and swelling. It typically causes painful flare ups in the big toe. While RA tends to cause more generalized joint discomfort, gout pain is more localized and can be severe during flare-ups. Both arthritic conditions can limit mobility and interfere with your daily activities. A podiatrist can evaluate your symptoms and suggest treatment that helps manage pain, reduce inflammation, and prevent further joint damage. Included are certain medications, targeted exercises and lifestyle or diet adjustments. If you have inflammatory pain in your feet, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for a diagnosis and the appropriate treatment.

When dealing with systemic disease of the feet, it is extremely important to check the affected areas routinely so that any additional problems are caught quickly.  If you have any concerns about your feet and ankles contact James Tyler Vestile, DPM from Foot and Ankle Centers of Indiana. Systemic Diseases of the Feet

Systemic diseases affect the whole body, and symptoms usually are displayed in the feet. This condition can make a patient’s ability to walk unbearable.  Systemic diseases include gout, diabetes mellitus, neurological disorders, and arthritis.

Gout – is caused by an excess of uric acid in the body. Common symptoms include pain, inflammation, and redness at the metatarsal/phalangeal joint of the base big toe. Gout can be treated by NSAIDs to relieve pain and inflammation, and other drugs that lower the acid levels in the body.

Diabetes mellitus – is an increase in the level of blood sugar that the body cannot counteract with its own insulin. Failure to produce enough insulin is a factor in Diabetes.

Diabetes of the Feet

Diabetic Neuropathy – may lead to damaged nerves and affect the feet through numbness and loss of sensation.

Peripheral Vascular Disease – can restrict the blood flow to the feet, and often times lead to amputation of the feet.

Surgery Options for Flat Feet

Flat feet, or fallen arches, is a condition where the foot's arch is either low or absent while standing. Sometimes having flat feet can lead to such discomfort that surgery is required when other treatments do not help. Surgery for flat feet often involves reconstructing the tibialis posterior tendon, which supports the arch. In cases of advanced arthritis, where pain and stiffness worsen, a procedure called fusion surgery may be necessary. This involves fusing bones in the foot or ankle to enhance stability. Recovery from flat foot surgery typically involves a hospital stay, followed by a period of rest with the foot elevated and protected in a cast. After about six weeks, a patient can generally begin putting weight on the foot. Flat foot surgery is a significant decision, and a podiatrist can assess the severity of your condition and guide you through the treatment options available. If you have foot pain caused by flat feet, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for a diagnosis and treatment.

Flatfoot is a condition many people suffer from. If you have flat feet, contact James Tyler Vestile, DPM from Foot and Ankle Centers of Indiana. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Are Flat Feet?

Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. About 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arches never formed during growth.

Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.

Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.

Symptoms

  • Pain around the heel or arch area
  • Trouble standing on the tip toe
  • Swelling around the inside of the ankle
  • Flat look to one or both feet
  • Having your shoes feel uneven when worn

Treatment

If you are experiencing pain and stress on the foot you may weaken the posterior tibial tendon, which runs around the inside of the ankle.
